A Proof of Concept: The social aspect of enterprise data

Something I truly enjoy about my job is that fact that I am given freedom to explore creative solutions to business challenges. Being in manufacturing and the extremely demanding automotive industry, we are consistently challenged to produce better product, at a lower cost and in a shorter time in order to maintain reasonable margins. We are often faced with implementing solutions which augment our manufacturing processes and enable production employees to have better insight to the products being produced which ultimately ensures better quality. Some of these solutions include real time production labeling (tightly integrated from PLC’s to SAP), On-line visual display of requirements and products being produced and even include metrics like OEE.  read more

iOS CRM for SAP and iPad – A free Mobile CRM App

Introduction

So its finally ready for a quick demo, the app has taken a little bit longer than expected to develop but has been a really good experience. Having worked very little little with CRM, it was interesting to get a bit of background knowledge and information about the product and its potential.

Background

I decided I wanted to build an enterprise app for the iPad while I was at TechEd a couple months ago, but wasn’t sure which direction to take – Should I go with a manufacturing related type app which assisted material handlers in the warehouse or something which is a little bit more generic and could be used by a wider audience. After meeting a couple great people at a Web Service Class (CD360) we got chatting and they planted the seed for something linked to CRM since users are often out of the office, don’t always want, or need, to take a laptop with them, and iPads seem to lend themselves well to such an environment. read more

SAP Note Viewer for iPad

Firstly, thanks to everyone for the support of the SAP Note Viewer for iPhone of this app, users have really been growing steadily since its release and as of yesturday we had around 925 users. Feedback has been great and some really awesome ideas are coming from  the community.

The app is currently in the App Store and can be found here.

The app has the same features as the iPhone version which have been listed below, but the ipad really is considerably better for viewing the notes than the phone.

I dont anticipate the app to do as well just due to the number of iPads versus iPhones in the market, but hopefully it will make a select few peoples lives just a little bit easier. (My intention!) read more

SAP Note Viewer for iPhone

Well, its been an interesting few months with the XCode platform and learning Objective C was interesting, but I am glad to announce my side project has been released and is available in the Apple App Store. The free app is called SAP Note Viewer for iPhone and is just that … a SAP OSS Note viewer which allows people to search for and download the notes and store them on their iPhone/iPad in PDF format.

The app also allows you to share the note details via email and mark specific notes as “Favorites” for easy reference.

Since this is Version 1, my intention is to simply get the ball rolling and hope for some feedback from the community to get some ideas on where it should go and what functionality everyone would like to see. read more

DIY: IGUS Slider for Timelapse and Long Exposure Photography

This was a fun project using a Arduino, a sliding rail and belt to pull a sled with a DSLR on it for taking long exposure photography, video or long exposures. This was mounted on a Tripod for some additional stability and flexibility.

Web App: Momz.co.za

Shortly before Charlotte being born, I recognized that there were quite a few US websites focused on support moms going through their journey of pregnancy, and the early years of of raising kids. Trying to emulate this for the South African market and emerging internet base, I built momz.co.za.

The page title was “Helping South African Moms with pregnancy, recipes, food, forums, safety and kids”

Technology

Technology wise the product was built using the community platform Dolphin, from Boonex. It is a great product and had multiple social media aspects available out of the box along with features like forums, blogs, groups and news, which was perfect for launching this community. read more

Bennetts IT Solutions – Tech Competition

My competitive nature early on during my studies at Port Elizabeth Technikon, in the pre-“hackathon” days where companies would put up a memo at your local university asking to get a challenge done 🙂 Myself and one other student won some $$$ analyzing and suggesting improvements for a local website.

This competition led to me getting a part-time job with company as a software developer.

Work Project: Maintenance App

Company: LuxDev
Time: 1999 – 2000
Project: A desktop application with the inventory and assets of each room in the Butterworth Hospital. Manage resources, time, materials, for their team. Written in VB.Net, and had an MS Access Database. I spent the year driving to Butterworth and inventorying room size, door sizes, components, etc. and then cataloging it in the DB. This was a wonderful jumpstart for me, I was still studying, working on the side and making a solid income, while gaining valuable software development experience.
